The clamour for Ogun West to produce the next governor of the State for the first time since its creation in 1976 is said to be getting less support from Ogun east comprising the Ijebu and Remo with nine local governments, Nigerian News Direct has learnt.
This is coming on the heels of the recent declaration by the incumbent governor, Sen.Ibikunle Amosun that he would only be supporting Ogun West Senatorial district to clinch the ruling All Progressives Congress party’s ticket for 2019 governorship election.
The governor was of the opinion that if Ogun east had produced the governor of the state thrice just like Ogun Central where the governor hails from, it is just fair and equitable to support Ogun West to produce the next occupant of Oke-Mosan in May 2019.
This understanding is however being subtly resisted by the people of Ogun West. Already, two politicians from this senatorial district, Otunba Dapo Abiodun and Arc. Owodunni Opayemi have signified their intention to contest for this coveted seat.
Arc. Opayemi recently as widely reported in the media rejected this zoning idea saying that rather than zoning, he would prefer the ruling party allow the best candidate with prerequisite qualification emerge from the party’s free and fair primary election. Dapo Abiodun, CEO of Heyden Petroleum also re-echoed this posture in an interview granted one of the dailies last week.
A PDP stalwart and loyalist of Senator Kashamu, Mr Yomi Solanke has also informed our Correspondent that the party was leaving its door open for anybody to contest for the governorship seat in the state.. Yomi Solanke who is the party Chairman of Ikenne local government explained that the opposition had supported this agenda twice in 2011 when it fielded Chief Idowu Olurin and in 2015 when Alahj. Gboyega Isiaka was its standard adding that the party would only be banking on any aspirant that is formidable enough to dislodge the ruling party in 2019 general election.
Arc. Kayode Adebayo, PDP Chairman for Ogun East also revealed that the opposition party would only be fielding its best for the next governorship challenge not minding which section of the State he or she came from.
Hon Ladi Adebutu representing Remo Federal constituency is one politician that has also never left anybody in doubt of his readiness to give the ruling party a good chase for their money as far as Ogun 2019 governorship race is concerned.
