The chairman of the South East Governors Forum, Chief David Umahi has ahead of the National convention of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said the party must do everything possible to eliminate bribery and corruption in party politics.
Umahi made this known in Abakaliki while addressing party stalwarts at the weekend noted that PDP is a great party but tasked all national chairmanship aspirants to do away with bribery and corruption especially in the forthcoming 2019 general election.
“I want all the chairmanship contestants to eschew this issue of bribery and corruption,” adding that if such is done, the party will grow.
Umahi further urged the party leadership to take up the challenge in ensuring that bribery and corruption is eliminated ahead of the elections.
“We must do everything to eliminate bribery and corruption in our party politics and this is very important.
“I have once being a party chairman and nobody or national assembly member will say that I collected a bottle of cocoa from him or her during such time.”
He noted that bribe cannot make anyone rich; “I am not a poor man and will never be a poor man because the idea of being rich is contentment,” he said.
The governor warned bribe takers to stay away from coming to Ebonyi in 2019 general election. “People are coming to do election in Ebonyi and we will use cutless to chase them out this time and they are coming to make money and nobody will make money here again.
“Come and do the work you are told to do. If the person wins the election and he has conscience, he will remember that this person came and delivered me but not to chop the thing and if the person didn’t have the money to continue with you, than you will begin to complain.”
Umahi revealed how some people demanded bribe from him in the last 2015 general elections.
“When we were vying for the party ticket, people may have asked me to give them money but I didn’t give. We didn’t give bribe but some people asked us to give and the day of reckoning has come and such people, we will not vote for them,” he stated.
