2019: Buhari declares intention to run for second term

…Ambition dead on arrival,  says Fayose

By Ayo Fadimu

President Muhammadu Buhari has declared his intention to run for the Presidency in 2019.

This was confirmed by a statement from Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu and also tweets by Personal Assistant to the President on News Media, Bashir Ahmad and Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

El-Rufai revealed Buhari made the announcement to the National Executive Committee of the APC in Abuja

Shehu , in the statement he released to the press stated that the  President made the disclosure at a closed- door meeting of the National Executive Council of the ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC) , held at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.

The statement read, “President Muhammadu on Monday in Abuja declared his intention to seek re-election in 2019.

“President Buhari made the declaration at a closed- door meeting of the National Executive Council of the All Progressives Congress.

“The President said he was responding to the clamour by Nigerians to re- contest in 2019 , adding that he wanted to give NEC the honour of notifying them first .

“Shortly before making the declaration, the President presented a speech on the report submitted by the APC National Executive Technical Committee.”

According to an online media, Buhari had earlier presented a speech on the report submitted by the APC National Executive Technical Committee, and specifically thanked members of the committee for carrying out its assignment on time.

“It shows a great sense of commitment to the ideals of our party with a view to consolidating and positioning the party to continue delivering good governance in the overall interest of Nigerians.

“With the present state of the party and based on the report submitted by the Technical Committee , it is important to focus on how to move the party forward by avoiding actions detrimental to the interest of the party.

“Considering that politics is a game of numbers , we must not be a house divided against itself and must try to note , appreciate and accommodate our differences as far as the law permits.

“Upon my review of the Report, my position is to ensure that the party tows the path of unity, legality and cohesion and not that of division ,

Information had creeped in that part of the reasons President Buhari is travelling to the United Kingdom is to go and rest as he will undergo thorough medical checkups over his reportedly unstable health before resuming back to face the rigours of Presidential campaign.

Apart from the President’s declaration to seek re-election, the NEC ratified the recommendation of the technical committee calling for the conduct of elections for national and state executive officers of the party. This is sequel to the illegal tag President Buhari placed on the granting of Party Chairman, Odigie Oyegun a one-year tenure elongation. Several chieftains of the party had hailed the President’s decision to openly criticise the tenure elongation as they prepared for the 2019 election amid mixed feelings among a largely disappointed populace.

In the meantime, Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has declared the President’s ambition as dead on arrival

Fayose insisted that Nigeria does not need President Muhammadu Buhari as her leader in 2019, noting that Monday’s declaration of reelection bid by the President is an ambition that is dead on arrival. Fayose also noted that if Buhari is reelected, he would kill the country.

Fayose, who spoke with newsmen in Ado-Ekiti on Monday on the President’s intention, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, said if Buhari was unable to read the handwriting on the wall and know when to quit, Nigerians would show him the exit door in 2019 by voting him out of office. Fayose opined that Buhari was not only too old to lead the country well, he had bungled the opportunity given him by his woeful performance.

“That ambition is dead on arrival. We don’t want grandpa as president anymore. Nigeria does not deserve a Buhari as president in 2019. Buhari is old and tired. When people don’t know when to take their leave and say bye, Nigerians will show them the exit door. “ He has done more harm to this country. His ambition is a means by which Nigerians will tell him good riddance to bad rubbish when they boot him out of office. He is an easy candidate to defeat in the poll for he has failed woefully. “He has failed in all fronts. He has failed in his so-called fight against corruption, he has failed in the economic front. He has not done well in terms of security. People are being killed in large numbers daily and Nigerians have no confidence in him.

“ His declaration today is a slap on Nigerians in the face of what Nigerians are passing through. His government is not only clueless, but in a shambles. He should go home and rest,” he said.
